A deeper look at categories v. tags

I'm about to embark on a short course in Wordpress Web design, so this comes up at a pretty good time.

This screenshot comes from a Wordpress-hosted blog I built, "a few good friends..." - and to really get the point you may need to view the image at full size.

Wordpress tells us that the major difference between a Category and a Tag is that the Category is used for broad classification of blog posts, and a Tag for more specific classification. The major idea is that you want to have classification with some depth instead of one honkin' long list.

But it turns out that the designers of this particular Wordpress theme ("Chaotic Soul") gave us a second use. If you look at this blog post, for instance, You see that the article was posted in (category classification) "Successes." But if you click on that, you get a list of blog posts all around Wordpress where "successes" is a tag. That's kind of cool, actually, because it gives you another way for folks to find your blog.

On the right-hand side, however, you see highlighted another link labeled "Successes." This has the traditional definition: every post on your own blog in that category.

I figure not every Wordpress theme does this automatically. But you can do it easily enough on your own blog, if the theme you've chosen isn't as smart as this one. LOL
