I promised, when I wrote How to Give a Geek Gift, to give you, friend reader, a few ideas with which to apply your commitment to courteous geek gift-giving. So here you go.
Rules
- The gift must have some use other than sitting there and looking geeky (which eliminates action figures).
- Its usefulness must not be limited to the geek (which eliminates light sabers).
- It must come at a price that normal people might be tempted to pay (which eliminates gold-plated Atari consoles).
- It must retain its usefulness after the holidays (which eliminates Christmas music and movies).
- It must be suitable for wearing or carrying around non-GEEKs (which eliminates much Star Trek, Star Wars, and super-hero gear).
So I have them listed in order of increasing price. If the name of the gift has a link, that means there is a review or sale page with partial review. In most cases, there is also an Amazon link for the same gift or one very similar, in case you are comparison-shopping.
And the gifts are - at least by me - certified cool.
- Utili-Key $10 (this six-function keychain tool is a most excellent stocking stuffer for anyone older than, say, 13!) - up to $8 via Amazon (unless you want a metal carrying box)
- Angry Birds Bad Piggies' Egg Recipes $10 (the war, shown above, is on hold pending book sales!) - $10 via Amazon
- Custom T-shirt (design it yourself, then maybe sell it after the holidays!) - Starts at $15 via Zazzle
- iWatchz Wrist Strap for iPod Nano $25 via Amazon
- Batman 4GB flash drive $25 (many geeks will not find this enough storage, but they may make do for the g*dd*m Batman!) - $25 via Amazon (these things are made in various sci-fi and super-hero characters. I am holding out for Katniss Everdeen.)
- USB Toast hand warmers $25 (cute!) - Amazon doesn't have toast, but they have others at $15
- Googly eye-clock $35 (be sure you can tell time without hands!) - starting at $25 via Amazon
- Star Trek Bathrobe up to $60 (you see how relaxed the guy is here, but don't get RED!) - same price via Amazon
- Sanctuary Charging Station $80 (highly useful!) - starting at $100 via Amazon
- Cube Laser Virtual Keyboard $180 (it's pricey but REALLY cool!) - $170 via Amazon
Please allow me to wish you a VERY happy holiday season! May none of your gifts get regifted!
