When Engineers Create
How engineers bring ideas to life
Dr. Ron Graham
Stark State University
Spring 2012

Abstract

Sometimes, a need comes along – for a brand-new device or system, or for a significant change to one already in place. The engineer may not be the only one to answer that need, but engineers will be called on at some point at least, to fine-tune the new creation.

At other times, someone – maybe an engineer – will look at an existing device or system, and see an opportunity to make it better, or use it in a new way. Engineers will have a part in bringing that about, even if they are not solely responsible.

Dr. Ron Graham
Stark State University
Spring 2012

Abstract

Statistical Process ControlIn this course, we consider the role the engineer plays (or can play, or should play) in the continuous improvement of products and services.

Because to figure out exactly how to improve things in the best way is something engineers can do well.

Designing For Use
Including features people need and don't know it
Dr. Ron Graham
Stark State University
Fall 2012

Abstract

This course is about design considerations for the engineer. In our profession, we often focus on the thing an object (e.g. machine, structure, program) is supposed to do, rather than the wider needs of an end user.

  • How do I make it work?
  • How do I know it's working?
  • What do I do if it's not?
  • How do I make it work better?

Abstract for "When Things Break"

Tacoma Narrows Bridge

Abstract

This course is about what happens when things break. When something breaks, engineers are called upon to ask themselves, and answer: What caused it? Could it have been prevented? What do we do now? And of course, who's responsible?

For my part, having been trained as an engineer myself, I could never bring myself to blame engineers, or the profession as a whole, for whatever mistakes we may have made over the years, no matter what damage may have been caused in a failure.

I use this information to remind engineers, and especially students, of the consequences of carelessness, of avoiding checks and doublechecks, of not including safety factors, of not budgeting for maintenance, and other such precautions. We have these things to use as tools because, as smart as we are, we simply aren't smart enough to keep the things we make from breaking.

A deeper look at share buttons

E-mail Print PDF

Just like the business about categories v. tags, share buttons in Wordpress blogs deserve a closer look. And first let me say this: there's a big difference between a blog hosted by wordpress.com (what I call the Com Blog) and one hosted elsewhere and powered by Wordpress (the Org Blog). It's the former I'm really interested in here, because it's free and thousands of people depend on it for that reason.

And, because it's free, you're really limited in things you can do to modify it. This is one area you have to watch when you make your blog.
