You’re On YouTube! (Or Twitter, or something...)
An introduction to business use of social media
Dr. Ron Graham
In this course, participants will receive an overview of four major social media platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube), and will compare and contrast business uses of social media presence, leading participants ideally to an understanding that works best for their own business. Here’s what these platforms are best known for:
- Facebook – visual connection with friends, relatives, (at times) strangers, and (in this case) customers
- LinkedIn – connection almost strictly with businesspeople, inside or outside your industry
- Twitter – where everything you say falls within 140 characters
- YouTube – your video footage, and perhaps your best chance of going viral
Each participant will set up an account on whichever of these platforms no such account yet exists, then through classroom exercises participants will be given a chance to judge different strategies, and decide what, if anything, works best for them. (Though the overwhelming majority of businesses benefit from social media presence, not every platform has the same positive effect on everybody.)
Case studies will include both success and failure stories (success usually meaning social media presence goes viral; failure usually meaning a company adopts social media but does not continue with it faithfully). We will also look at social media from the the mainstream media's perspectives.
Participants should be interested in such strategic insight, and though all experience levels are welcome, new adopters will probably receive the greatest benefits from this course.
